Self-Care

Self-care is more than bubble baths and wine. Self-care is the practice of nourishing your body, mind, and soul so you can be your best self!

‘If you don’t make time for your wellness, you will be forced to make time for your illness.’ I first heard this quote at a presentation at a teachers’ convention a couple of years ago. It resonated with me as I worked myself to a burnout stage several times already in my teaching career. How could I do things differently going forward? There was no time to really reflect and did deep at the time (progress reports! parent-teacher meetings! open house!), but the idea kept floating around in my mind in the years to come.

It took a forced leave of absence from work for me to realize how true this quote is. While at home, I started (unintentionally at first, then becoming more intentional over time) incorporating self-care practices into my daily routine. Spending more time in nature, enjoying physical activity with my family, learning new hobbies, experimenting with cooking, journalling, meditating, and reading personal development books all helped me improve my wellness. A year later, I see the profound impact all of these little things had on my physical, mental, and emotional health. Self-care, even if it’s only 10 minutes a day, makes a big difference to our wellness, which in turn affects how you feel about yourself and how you are able to interact with the world.

Our wellness is an integral piece of who we are. It is multi-dimensional and most models of wellness include at least six dimensions: physical, mental, emotional, spiritual, social, and environmental. The Global Wellness Institute defines wellness as the “active pursuit of activities, choices, and lifestyles that lead to a state of holistic health”. (globalwellnessinstitute.org/what-is-wellness/).
